'Filthy Rich Nepo Babies'

nodistancerecords

It’s over. The longest January on record is done. I don’t know about you, but these 472-day months at the beginning of the year are just cruel.

We asked people over on Instagram what songs helped them get through January, and while a lot of people just nominated songs by their own bands (sigh), some did flag up some other tunes which are genuinely great.

We stuck them into a playlist, which is well worth a listen if you want to swing between The Prodigy, James, Fontaines D.C. and some actually decent tunes from some up and coming bands.

Raise your glass to Lambrini Girls

The big indie hit so far this year is Lambrini Girls, who saw their debut album reach number 16 in the charts.

In keeping with their track “Filthy Rich Nepo Baby”, the band set out the challenges facing musicians who aren’t born with silver Les Pauls in their hands when they appeared on BBC6 Music.

I know it’s hardly news, but it’s difficult to truly express just how difficult it is for a band to break through these days.A lot of this is self-inflicted to be honest – we collectively stopped buying records in favour of streaming, and as we all know, Spotify just don’t pay well enough. (And yes, we use Spotify so I'm including myself in this!)

A band needs between 8,000 and 9,000 streams to count as one record sale – and that’s if they own all the rights to the song. A track can cost between £300 to £600 to record, mix, and master, so you need about 300,000 streams just to get that back.

Then there’s marketing, videos, radio plugging, adverts.

Anyway, it was good to hear an artist who is doing well reflecting on how much music is fast becoming a pursuit of the wealthy alone.

Coming up

Our first gig of the year is on Friday February 7 at Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes in Shoreditch.

Headlining are Candide, a group that has a clear mission: create mind-altering, joyous music for the masses. Candide uses guitar, bass, and drums like lances in a joust, piercing freaky sound waves right through your mother-flippin’ head.

Also on the bill is The King of May, a songwriter that – together with rag-tag wrecking crew Roundtable – makes quicksilver mercury music that turns deceivers into believers and believers into saints.

Opening the show will be Room Service. Intense. Talented. Pretty much definitely the Next Big Thing

Every week we hunt through the latest indie/alternative releases to add to our Release Radar playlist.

We have two rules for eligibility:

1) The artist can't have more than 20,000 monthly listeners

2) The artist can't have any song with over 100,000 plays

We do this so we can really focus on up-and-coming acts, and I'll be honest, we ALWAYS strike gold. We've signed bands to our label that we've discovered this way.
